Guess what? Now you can open your curtains by just pressing your smartphone. Smart curtains, cool huh?

This technology is not new though. It’s basically attaching an electric motor to a curtain road and linking it to an control system that sends commands to stop, open and close. Home automation system engineers have been doing this since the stone age but it was only a thing of the Tony-Stark rich.

But not anymore. Introducing the almighty and glorious SwitchBot Automatic Curtain Opener, your one and only redeemer into curtain automation paradise. This baby is for everybody, I mean EVERYBODY because it won’t break the bank at all. Price is relatively fair.

Many thanks to SwitchBot, the company behind this device. All the circuits, control electronics and electric motors have been merged and embedded together, closed in that fruity-shaped body hanging from the curtain rod. It’s powered by 4 lithium ion batteries that can last up to 8 months.

How to install it

The installation is a DIY process because it’s pretty easy. You hook up the motorised rollers to the curtain track or rod at the first gap of your curtain rings or holes depending with the type of curtain you have. And that’s it.

Diy installation of opener

One automatic curtain opener can only open one curtain so if you have the cinema-auditorium type of curtains that open from the middle, you will need two automatic curtain openers.

Another thing to look out for is the thickness of rods holding your curtains. This device is only compatible with rods whose diameter falls in the range 0.625 inches – 1.5inches or a circumference range of 1.9 inches – 4.9 inches.

Most curtain rods fall in this range but outliers obviously exist. So before you get the opener you may want to measure the diameter/circumference of your curtain rods, just to be sure you’re not an outlier.

How it works

This is the best part. Remote control baby. There are several options you can use to operate your curtain openers.

Control options

  1. Switchbot remote
  2. Mobile app (timer and group control)
  3. Alexa (voice commands)
  4. Siri (voice commands)

You can open and close remotely. You can group or batch your automation curtain openers to respond to one command. You can set timers so that curtains close or open at a specific time. You can configure them to open at sunrise and close at sunset.

There’s also an option of adding on a solar panel to the opener to take advantage of the light that falls on it during the afternoon. The solar power recharges the opener.

There is a growing crowd of folks who have already bought this automatic curtain opener, used it and gave reviews of the product. From what they said, here’s the pros and cons of this gadget.
